· place, he emphatically points out the distinction, as often lost sight of in England, between Opiun Smoking and Opium Eating. The former is the Characteristic and often ruinously - expensive luxury of China, and itis to the effects of that habit that he shiefly confines his remarks . The

conclusion at which he arrives is
